Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the option to question specific calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
