No less than 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio de Janeiro's Largest Police Raid on Gangs
A minimum of 64 civilians died in a security raid targeting the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the most extensive and fatal action in the area's past.
Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during the security mission in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials reported. More than 80 individuals were taken into custody.
Intense confrontations commenced when about 2,500 law enforcement officers initiated the operation on Tuesday early hours. The Red Command responded with armed resistance, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, authorities stated.
The International human rights organization expressed being "horrified" by the police operation, demanding "immediate and thorough inquiries".
Raid Aftermath
The slum neighborhoods adjacent to the aerial transportation hub is seen as the headquarters of a major organised crime groups.
Local authorities said a minimum of 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Dozens of people were wounded, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.
Local Reaction
Locals have likened the hillside area - home to about 300,000 individuals - to a "battlefield" since the operation began.
Access ways continue shut in the entire neighborhood.
Criminal Expansion
The Red Command group have been expanding their territory across the Rio state, growing illegal substance trade paths and power in the informal settlements.
Security forces reported more than 200kg (441lb) of drugs were seized in the operation, together with dozens of firearms.

The joint operation by different law enforcement agencies was preceded by a year-long investigation.
Numerous alleged criminals are believed to be participants in an organization from the Pará state who are presently concealed in Rio de Janeiro.
