Aaron Rai Clinches Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Playoff Showdown Versus Tommy Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional nerve to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating his compatriot in a dramatic playoff after a rollercoaster final round of play.

The Englishman sank a decisive birdie putt from around eight feet to seal the victory, echoing his sole prior tournament triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a play-off win against the same opponent.

Sunday's Play Drama

The champion entered the final round with a single stroke advantage over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, 67 closing round that featured seven birdie putts and two bogeys.

Fleetwood moved one shot ahead with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie on the 16th, but his rival tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the final hole.

Play-Off Climax

That set up a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even more individual. To compete alongside him the last two days was really special,” said the winner, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s difficult to put into words at the present how it feels. It is incredible to be stood here.”

Other Contenders

The Northern Irish star left himself just too much to do, finishing a stroke short in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a stunning 10-under final round of 62. It was his lowest-ever round on the European Tour, including eight birdies and an eagle.

The Danish golfer carded six birdie putts of his own, but his chances of topping the leaderboard were hit by a bogey on the 12th. England’s Richard Mansell hit an excellent last round seven-under to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Hillier.
