A Tragic Change a Single Year Has Caused in America
Twelve months back, the landscape was completely separate. Ahead of the American presidential vote, considerate residents could recognize the nation's serious imperfections – its unfairness and imbalance – however they could still perceive it as the US. A democracy. A country where constitutional order held significance. A state headed by a respectable and decent official, even with his older age and declining health.
Currently, in late October 2025, numerous citizens scarcely know the nation we inhabit. Individuals suspected of being undocumented migrants are detained and forced into transport, at times blocked from fair treatment. The left side of the White House – is being destroyed for an obscene event space. The leader is harassing his political rivals or perceived antagonists and insisting federal prosecutors surrender an enormous amount of public funds. Armed military personnel are being sent across metropolitan centers with deceptive justifications. The military command, relabeled the Department of War, has practically freed itself of regular press examination during its expenditure of what could amount to almost one trillion dollars in public funds. Institutions, legal practices, media outlets are yielding due to presidential intimidation, and wealthy elites are regarded as nobility.
“The US, only a few months ahead of its 250th birthday as the planet's foremost free society, has tipped over the brink into autocracy and extremism,” an American historian, stated recently. “Finally, swifter than I believed likely, it transpired in this country.”
One awakes amid recent atrocities. And it is challenging to understand – and distressing to accept – just how far gone we have become, and how quickly it has happened.
Nevertheless, we understand that the president was duly elected. Even after his deeply disturbing first term and even after the alerts linked to the understanding of the rightwing blueprint – despite the leader directly stated openly he intended to be a dictator only on the first day – enough Americans elected him rather than the other candidate.
As terrifying as today's circumstances is, it's more daunting to recognize that we’re only several months into this administration. What will another 36 months of this downfall position us? And what if the three years becomes an prolonged era, because there is no one to restrain this leader from opting that another term is necessary, perhaps for national security reasons?
Certainly, there is still hope. There are legislative votes next year that could bring a different balance of power, should Democrats recapture either chamber of parliament. There exist elected officials who are striving to exert certain responsibility, such as Democratic congressmen who are launching an investigation regarding the effort to cash appropriation from legal authorities.
And a presidential election in the next cycle could start our journey to healing precisely as the previous vote set us on this regrettable path.
There exist numerous residents demonstrating in the streets throughout communities, like they performed last weekend in the No Kings rallies.
An ex-cabinet member, wrote recently that “the slumbering force of the US is awakening”, just as it did post-McCarthyism in the 1950s or throughout the sixties activism or in the seventies crisis.
During those times, the listing ship finally returned to balance.
He claims he understands the signs of that resurgence and sees it happening at present. As support, he references the recent massive protests, the extensive, multi-faction opposition regarding a television host's removal and the largely united defiance by media to sign military mandates they report only authorized information.

It's a hopeful perspective, and I appreciate the author's seasoned opinion. Possibly he may be validated.
At the same time, the major inquiries endure: can America regain its footing? Is it possible to restore its position in the world and its devotion to constitutional order?
Or must we acknowledge that the historical project functioned for a period, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?
My negative thoughts indicates that the second option is true; that all may indeed be gone. My hopeful heart, though, advises me that we have to attempt, in whatever ways possible.
Personally, as an observer of the press, that’s about encouraging reporters to adhere, more completely, to their mission of holding power to account. For different individuals, it may be working on election efforts, or organizing rallies, or developing approaches to protect electoral access.
Under twelve months back, we existed in an alternate reality. A year from now? Or after another term? The reality is, we cannot predict. All we can do is to strive to not give up.
