A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
